I was very excited to speak to Lindsay about her journey into Online Entrepreneurship because I consider her somewhat of an accidental entrepreneur. 

She graduated from University with a biology degree and a ton of debt. 

She had an evil house that drained her financial and mental resources. 

But, she kept on keeping on.

Lindsay experienced depression and got to the point where there was nowhere to but up and pride was basically gone. 

I've known Lindsay for a while and she is a testament to the notion that things can change.

Let's be clear, I never knew that it was possible to fall in love with something as mundane as an accounting process. But, XERO has me eating my words. I love it! But, let's talk about my previous accounting experiences as a new business owner.

Uggh, so painful. 

Yep, accounting for the past couple of years has been painful. I'm on a cash budget which I love, but managing business finances is a bit different from managing my personal finances in that I am constantly trying to keep track of expenses that I have the potential to be taxed or tax-deductible sometime during the year. 

I'm holding onto receipts like a hoarder and I'm finding the business of managing my businesses' finances really stressful. I'm running Google Spreadsheets, going through my checking account, and just constantly trying to keep track of "all the things" that run my business. It's so stressful.

One of the most important functions that an entrepreneur has to get a handle on immediately is cash flow management. Without a good system for managing incoming income and outgoing expenses and taxes, the would-be entrepreneur may find their business dead in the water financially. Arm yourself with the tool that will help you manage your business finances like a badass.

Owning Your Business Vision and the Brand of YOU (D.O.N.E. Podcast)

I'm feeling pretty excited about the upcoming week. After a prolonged delay, I'm in the process of launching my coaching business. 

Say What?!

Yep, I am transitioning into coaching after being a bit...reticent...about it. And, I'll tell you why. I spent 10 years advising international students and connecting them with resources, tools, assistance, and helping connect them with a community. It was actually a wonderful fit for my personality because I got to operate in my zone of genius. 

I love helping people. 

But, like most people, I burnt out. I gave until I could give no more and while I was positioning myself to work on my in my "Zone of Genius" but, online-I hesitated.

What was I afraid of?

  • A repeat of the experience from before where I allowed myself to be sucked dry physically and emotionally.

 

  • Imposter Syndrome-This really hurt me last year. I found myself questioning my strengths and focused on my perceived weaknesses. What I didn't realize is that entrepreneurs learn by DOING, by experiencing failure, and by evaluating what worked and what didn't work with a process. 

 

  • Wanting to ask for what I know that I'm worth...and getting shot down OR being perceived as not giving enough value to justify what I asked for. 

The fears are a very real thing to address but I knew that my skills were needed after seeing report after report about:

  • Jobs being lost as entire industries change

 

  • Families wanting to spend more time together but they can't because they can't imagine a different way of creating money.

 

  • People having ideas for online business but having no idea about how to get started.

I finally learned to trust that I had more than enough to share as an entrepreneur. And, that it was time to help other wonderful people change their lives.

2016-The Year that Wasn't

I spend some time reflecting honestly on what did (or didn't) work in 2016 as an online entrepreneur.

Lessons Learned:

  • I realized that I wasn't really an online entrepreneur until about September/October. I realized that I just didn't understand what I could offer in terms of products and services online.
  • Consistency-I was incredibly inconsistent. This was a HUGE problem. If there is a take away from my previous year that everyone should learn is this: SHOW UP and be 100% in. 
  • Mission and people before profit. I spoke with Tiffany "The Budgetnista" Aliche recently and she was so clear about this being the #1 part of her community's unbelievable growth. **I will share a 3 part podcast series with Tiffany starting on Thursday. Anyone looking to serve others should listen to these episodes. As a result of this conversation I am rethinking everything that I've been doing.
  • It's good that I dropped the ball in the beginning...as long as I remember the lessons that I learned from dropping the ball. 

The Future:

I have some really big ideas for the future and the future of D.O.N.E. My mantra/phrase or focus is the following "How you do anything...is how you do everything." 

I'm truly focused on the idea that how I'm doing on thing is problem how I'm doing everything so I'm trying to:

  • Be true to my word. I don't promise anything that I cannot follow through on.
  • Being consistent!
  • Making sure that I am always working proactively vs. reactively

 

How to Monetize When You Don't Want to Be a Coach

It feels like everyone in the online space is becoming a coach. There are a number of reasons for this: you can share your expertise, build authority, help other people achieve their goals, and make great money.

Really Great Money

When I began The D.O.N.E. Society, the original idea that I had was to eventually become a coach. This wasn't a stretch as I spent the past 10 years of my life working with people and connecting them with resources to make their lives better.

As I began working on growing TDS I noticed that I loved connecting with group members but the idea of one on one coaching as a part of my long-term earnings plan became more and more unappealing. 

In retrospect, this should have been a surprise. What I loved doing in my old job: meeting people, helping connect them with great resources and cool events I was recreating in my business model. What I accidentally added to my business was the one thing I didn't enjoy in my old job: having to always be available. 

When I began thinking about working for myself the number one goal that I had was to grow my passive income but it was very easy to get distracted by the numerous other ways there are to make money online. 

Coaching is Not for Me

One-time webinars, one on one time in my groups, and special events are great. Coaching people on a weekly basis just won't work for me because it's too close to what I used to do before. 

So how on earth do I plan on monetizing while growing a community...but not offering ongoing coaching? Fortunately, there are a ton of ways to do this. 

  • Short-term courses
  • Membership site
  • Affiliate income
  • Sponsored content
  • Events
  • Joint Venture Collaborations
  • Ads
  • Online content
  • Podcast sponsors/podcast ads
  • Public speaking

I will be frank and say that all of these ways of making money are very appealing but that my favorite ways to make money involve passive income.

It's a bit addictive. 

I love helping people and then when I'm done for the day, signing off and waking up in the morning with cash in my account. Moving forward I will focus on serving the people that I'm helping via:

  • The D.O.N.E. Society
  • Colorado Luv Hub (my Colorado niche site)
  • The Shop My Closet Project (my personal finance site)

In order to earn more, I need to serve more. I will focus on that and work to help as many people as I possibly can.

I am a member of a number of closed Facebook groups and I've begun to notice some things that will make or break how a member is perceived by the community and the group administrators/founders.

You want to become a standout without being annoying and sometimes people struggle with how that works.
